Gjentakelse — Indigenous communities and other minorities

Example

'gjentakelse'/'taking up again' 'Western' records in the context of the Sámi people's interaction with 'Western' institutions (§7 of RiC-AG).

Theme

description (in the rich possibilities offered by RiC) can play a key role, in all of the ways discussed in this talk. Piecing together fragments into descriptive proto-Records (which can become actual Records); bridging 'orthodox' Records (e.g. scientific data) with 'folk knowledge'; incorporating traditionally extra-archival entities.

Epistemological distance

between the indigenous relationship to the past and the institutionalised 'Western' one means that the indigenous are particularly under/mis-represented in 'Western' records. But applies to a significant extent to any minority.

Archival description as a kind of activism.
