Re-construction

archivists at the Institute for National Remembrance (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej — IPN) in Poland, through the Center for Information on the Victims of World War II, do a remarkable job in 'joining the dots': linking disparate records pertaining to a victim, leading to an entry for that victim in their database.

The creation of a Record can be conceptually equivalent to an act of description.

Non-standard narratives

some police officers were arrested as civilians in 1940; may have been killed not during the Katyn massacres, but as part of the chaotic NKVD prisoner shootings in 1941 following the German invasion of the Soviet Union. 'Folk knowledge' (e.g. eye-witness accounts passed down in families) is an essential part of the provenance of the records/descriptions the IPN creates in such cases.

NB

the 'diplomatics' school of archival thought rejects folk knowledge. In Records in Contexts, one does not need to adhere to such proscriptions (but one can, of course, express work according to the principles of diplomatics too).
